Finally the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 plus is released, so what new, well lets have a look.
iPhone 7 and 7 plus comes in the following colours: Silver, Gold, Rose Gold, Matte Black, Jet Black
The iPhone 7 Home Button
The home button of the iPhone 7 has been redesigned which is not noticeable until you have used it. The home button is in solid state this time so there is no physical click, in fact the iPhone 7 doesn’t have an actual button for the Home button, instead iPhone 7 uses an enhanced Taptic Engine to detect and simulate clicks. When you click on the shiny button it feels as if you are clicking on a button but actually it’s an illusion and it’s actually Taptic engine doing its thing. Because of this new feature you can no longer use your fingernails or capacitive glove to activate the home button but you never know we may see some new types of gloves arriving in stores soon to make this feature more attractive.
Quad Core CPU
Every year the iPhone remained the fastest smart phone in the market but this time apple made a big jump forward with a quad core CPU. iPhone 7 has a new generation chip called A10 fusion. It’s a four core cpu with over 3.3 billion transistors. First it has 2 high performance core which runs 40% faster than the A9 cpu in iPhone 6s and 6s plus and it’s 2x faster than A8 in iPhone 6 and 6 plus. It is 120 x faster than the original iPhone. The other 2 core in iPhone 7 is known as high efficiency core, they run at 1/5th the power of the high performance core so when you are doing something that isn’t performance limited by the CPU like checking your email that can run at high efficiency core to get longer battery life. So how does the phone decide what runs on which core, well for this the phone has Apple-designed performance controller that in real time make sure the correct processors are running for maximum performance and maximum battery life.
In addition you also get amazing graphics in A10. It’s a 6 core graphics chip that is 50% faster than the A9 and 3x faster than the A8. It is 240x faster than the original iPhone and combining CPU performance and the graphics performance all running efficiently, there is absolutely no question that the A10 fusions the most powerful chip ever in a smartphone.
Most importantly the A10 fusion will enable users to run apps that were almost impossible to run on a mobile device, app such as console level gaming and pro apps such as 3d and graphics editing software.
iPhone 7 has 2GB RAM just like the iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus and iPhone SE but the 7 plus model has 3GB RAM to handle the extra features of the camera on iPhone 7 plus. The two different size ram does make a difference but majority of the user won’t notice any differences between the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus when it comes to overall performance.
No headphone jack
Well the big hoo-ha, Apple said bye bye to the big headphone jack but I think they made this decision too early as many users do not like this new feature. The 3.5mm headphone jack is replaced with the new lightening port feature. You can still use a wired headphone using the lighting to 3.5mm adaptor which is included with your iPhone 7 and if you lose it, Apple will charge you $9 (£9, AU$12) for a replacement.
Apple also released a wireless headphone called Airpods alongside the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 plus. These are similar to Apple Earpods but are wireless and connects through Bluetooth. The airpods features a touch sensitive back which you can tap to activate Siri and answer calls using the built in microphone. The headphones come in a very slick looking charging case with a flip lid. Once you flip open the lid the iPhone automatically recognise that the headphones are ready to use. This cool looking Airpod is very expensive though and will cost you £159. The Airpods offers 5 hours of life on a single charge.
Water & dust resistance
Apple used what is known as IP67 protection standard on iPhone 7 to make it safe from water and dust. It has re-engineered the device from inside out to make sure all its features and buttons are all fully protected.
iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus Camera
The camera on a smartphone is the most beloved features these days and because of this the new camera on the iPhone 7 and 7 plus is a huge advancement in photography for cell phones. The camera features optical image stabiliser which helps steady from shaking hands and it has 3x longer exposure. It has a wider f/1.8 aperture lens which lets 50% more lights on to the sensor. There is a new six element lens so you can get sharp image edge to edge without f/1.8 aperture and there is a all-new 12 mega pixel sensor which is 60% faster and 30% more efficient. It also has Quad-LED True Tone Flash. The most important feature on the camera is the Apple-design image signal processor which enables you to take the best quality picture with your smart phone. The ISP is so smart that it performs over 100 billion operations every time we take a picture with the iPhone 7 and it does it in 25 milliseconds. Some of the things it takes care of while you are taking pictures are, face and body detection, auto exposure, sets focus using focus pixels, sets the colour with white balance, captures wide colour, balances off tone mapping, handles noise reduction, combine multiple images to give you the perfect image. The camera also features a 7MP FaceTime HD camera.
Camera features summary:
- All new 12MP Camera
- Optical Image Stabilization
- f/1.8 aperture
- Six element lens

Camera on iPhone 7 plus
The iPhone 7 Plus has two 12MP cameras. First camera is the wide angle camera which is the same as the iPhone 7 camera and the second is the telephoto camera with 56mm lens. This second telephoto lens effectively gives the iPhone 7 Plus a 2x optical zoom. In a nutshell, this means you can get closer to your subject without the loss of image quality you’d see on the regular iPhone 7 or previous iPhones.
Retina HD display
The Retina HD display is the best display on any smartphone and in iPhone 7 and 7 plus it gets even better. It features 25% brighter display, wide colour gamut, cinema standard, colour management and 3D touch.

VERDICT: Would I buy a iPhone 7 or 7 plus
Yes I would if a have a lot of money but if I am on budget I think I would look at iPhone 6s as an attractive option as there isn’t any big changes apart from slightly longer battery life, better features on the camera and fast innards and protection against water and dust. If I do buy one I would go for 7 plus option just because of the 2 camera features for better picture and video quality. As for colour I like the jet black option but the problem is once you touched the phone you can see visible finger prints all over the phone so I think the matte black is a better option.
